ALL ACCESS has learned that ELROY SMITH has exited as Program Director of BONNEVILLE's R&B KBLX (102.9)/SAN FRANCISCO. 

SMITH said in a message, "After an extraordinary run at BONNEVILLE INT’L, SF, today was my last day as program director of the legendary 102.9 KBLX. The WEST COAST was never on my radar, but thanks to PAT PAXTON, ENTERCOM, the company that previously owned KBLX, and STEVE DINARDO, who was the market manager, both gave me the opportunity to oversee this iconic radio station for close to five years.

Alpha Media Enters Financial Restructuring With Lenders Under Chapter 11

ALPHA MEDIA, operating in 44 local markets, has announced that it has entered into a restructuring agreement under CHAPTER 11 with certain of its lenders to reduce its debt. The agreement will also raise incremental capital to allow ALPHA MEDIA to successfully navigate current market conditions and pursue growth opportunities.

Recap: Legendary Radio & TV Host/Commentator Larry King Dies At 87

In case you missed this breaking NET NEWS (1/23) on SATURDAY, the industry mourns the passing of longtime radio and television host LARRY KING. He died early SATURDAY morning (1/23) at CEDARS-SINAI MEDICAL CENTER in LOS ANGELES. He was 87 and had been battling COVID-19. His death was announced on his TWITTER account by ORA TV.

KING, a BROOKLYN native born LAWRENCE ZEIGER, began his career at WAHR-A/MIAMI in 1957, moved to WKAT in 1958, back to WAHR (renamed WAME) in 1961, and joined WIOD-A in 1963. He also worked in television at WPST-TV/WLBW-TV and WTVJ (TV), and as color commentator for MIAMI DOLPHINS football in 1970-71. In 1978, KING went national as host of the overnight slot on MUTUAL BROADCASTING SYSTEM, becoming well-known for his interviews and "Open Phone AMERICA" segments. After moving to afternoons for a year, the show ended in 1994. more »

Townsquare Repurchases 10 Million Shares

TOWNSQUARE MEDIA has entered into an agreement to repurchase a minimum of 10 million of the 12.5 million shares of Class A common stock, shares of Class B common stock and warrants held by funds managed by OAKTREE CAPITAL MANAGEMENT for $6.40 per security, which reflects a 19% discount from the closing price of the Class A common stock on FRIDAY, JANUARY 22nd.

The aggregate purchase price is expected to be at least $64 million, subject to the company’s ability to elect to purchase additional securities at closing of the repurchase.

“We appreciate the opportunity to facilitate this significant transaction with OAKTREE and are excited about this repurchase, which secures the exit of a very long-term private equity majority shareholder that current and potential shareholders have described to me consistently as being an obstacle to investing more, or establishing a position, in Townsquare given the significant overhang OAKTREE’s holding represented,” said TOWNSQUARE CEO BILL WILSON. “This repurchase is immediately accretive to shareholders and we thank our Board of Directors for their vote of confidence in our medium and long-term business plan to grow revenue and profits.”

Entercom Bets On Sports Gambling Programming With New 'BetQL Audio Network'

From ENTERCOM's recent acquisition of the sports data and IGAMING affiliate platform QL GAMING GROUP, it has launched “BETQL AUDIO NETWORK.” The network will feature sports gambling programming heard across ENTERCOM’s portfolio of sports stations, which combined reach over seven million listeners per week, as well as the RADIO.COM app and digital platform.

Two daily shows will headline the network – “YOU BETTER YOU BET” with NICK KOSTOS and KEN BARKLEY, which received an average of over 670,000 monthly downloads since the start of the 2020 NFL season, and “BETQL DAILY” with JOE OSTROWSKI and ROSS TUCKER, which was launched in SEPTEMBER 2020 and formerly known as “BETSWEATS.” Network programming will also initially include “BETQL COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF,” which has run throughout the NFL playoffs, with future programming expansion announced at a later date.
 
As part of the network launch, KEZW-AM/DENVER will relaunch as THE BET 1430AM, serving as a broadcast distribution channel for “BETQL AUDIO NETWORK” content. The network will subsequently launch on 93.1 HD3 (THE BET)/LOS ANGELES. All programming will continue to be available in live and on-demand audio and video formats via RADIO.COM.

John Hanson Exits PD Post At WCCO/Minneapolis

ENTERCOM News-Talk WCCO-A/MINNEAPOLIS PD JOHN HANSON has exited the station, reports the MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE.

The paper obtained a memo to staff from ENTERCOM SVP/Market Manager SHANNON KNOEPKE saying that HANSON "is no longer with the company."

HANSON joined WCCO in DECEMBER 2018 from sister Sports KCSP-A (610 SPORTS RADIO) and KWOD-A (1660 THE SCORE)/KANSAS CITY and previously worked in the TWIN CITIES co-hosting HUBBARD ABC affiliate KSTP-TV's "TWIN CITIES LIVE" (for which he won an open audition) after programming LOTUS Sports KBAD-A and KENO-A/LAS VEGAS.

Gene Knight Exits Afternoons at KYXY (96.5)/San Diego

ALL ACCESS has learned that in addition to last week's programming changes at ENTERCOM's AC KYXY (96.5) and Classic Hits KXSN (SUNNY 98.1)/SAN DIEGO (NET NEWS 1/19), GENE KNIGHT’s PM Drive position was also eliminated on FRIDAY (1/22). It's reported SHERRY KNIGHT has moved into the PM Drive slot for now. 

GENE KNIGHT first joined KYXY in 1999 where he hosted afternoons and then nights until 2012. After a stint as Music Director at LM SAN DIEGO Rhythmic Oldies XHRM (MAGIC 92.5), he joined KXSN in 2016 before moving back to afternoons at KYXY in 2019. He also served as Music Director for both KYXY and KXSN.  more »

Tom Brokaw Retiring After 55 Years At NBC

NBC News anchor TOM BROKAW announced his retirement FRIDAY (1/22) after 55 years with NBC. BROKAW, 80, is the only anchor to have led all three of NBC's primary news shows: NIGHTLY NEWS, TODAY and MEET THE PRESS.

BROKAW said in a statement, "During one of the most complex and consequential eras in AMERICAN history, a new generation of NBC NEWS journalists, producers and technicians is providing AMERICA with timely, insightful and critically important information, 24/7. I could not be more proud of them."

BROKAW has numerous, prestigious journalism awards, including PEABODYS, DUPONTS, EMMYS and THE EDWARD R. MURROW AWARD for Lifetime Achievement in Broadcasting.  more »

Bubba The Love Sponge Dismisses Case Against Cox Media Group, Mike Calta, Matt Loyd

BUBBA THE LOVE SPONGE CLEM's lawsuit against COX MEDIA GROUP, Talk WHPT (102.5 THE BONE)/TAMPA morning host MIKE CALTA, and former BUBBA producer MATT "SPICEBOY" LOYD for "malicious and deceitful destruction of his business relationships and career" (NET NEWS 3/13/19) has been dismissed with prejudice. CLEM's attorneys filed a notice of voluntary dismissal in PINELLAS COUNTY, FL court on JANUARY 20th, with the parties agreeing to pay their own attorneys' fees and costs.

BUBBA filed suit on MARCH 3, 2019 repeating his allegations from his suit against NIELSEN that that when he left WHPT for crosstown BEASLEY station WBRN in 2014, CALTA made on-air allegations of ratings tampering and leaked the infamous HULK HOGAN tapes to GAWKER, and that COX pressured NIELSEN into a "sting operation" that led to WBRN's OCTOBER 2015 delisting and, ultimately, termination of his deal with BEASLEY. The suit alleged tortious interference with contractual relationships, tortious interference with advantageous business relationships, and violation of FLORIDA's Deceptive & Unfair Trade Practices Act.

Dismissal with prejudice means the case cannot be relitigated in state court. The most recent activity in the case consisted of non-party NIELSEN AUDIO's motion in OCTOBER to quash or modify subpoenas in order to prevent disclosure of settlement agreements between itself and BUBBA.

Acting CEO KELU CHAO taps DAISY SINDELAR as acting head of RADIO FREE EUROPE/RADIO LIBERTY, replacing TED LIPIEN until a permanent president is named. BAY FANG will return to her post as RADIO FREE ASIA President, replacing STEPHEN YATES. KELLEY SULLIVAN will become acting MIDDLE EAST BROADCASTING NETWORKS President, replacing VICTORIA COATES.

“I have great faith in these leaders in ensuring the highest standards of independent, objective, and professional journalism,” CHAO told the AP.

SoCal Radio Stations To Commemorate The One-Year Anniversary Of Kobe Bryant's Tragic Death

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of KOBE BRYANT’s tragic death, all SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION member radio stations will air a 24-second moment of silence on TUESDAY, JANUARY 26th at 9:45a (PT)  – coinciding with the time the helicopter carrying BRYANT, his daughter GIANNA and seven others crashed in AGOURA HILLS, CA one year ago. 

Following the moment of silence, which represents BRYANT's LAKERS jersey number, participating stations will play the attached audio montage tribute, which highlights some of the raw emotion from news reporters, NBA coaches, players and friends following his death.

CMA Funds Additional Nonprofit Partners Via Its COVID-19 Support Initiative

The COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION (CMA) announced TODAY (1/25) continued efforts through its Music Industry COVID Support (MICS) initiative, with additional funding for five nonprofit partners: MUSIC HEALTH ALLIANCE, MUSICALLY FED, NOTES FOR NOTES, PORTER’S CALL and THE STORE. Those, along with previous nonprofit investments supporting music industry professionals, are supported through CMA’s $3 million long-term COVID-19 commitment that began in early 2020.

MICS was established as a portal for key resources in the categories of food supply, health and wellness, and career services, and helps connect industry professionals with nonprofit partners offering critical support. An estimated 50,000-plus music jobs have been impacted by the pandemic in TENNESSEE alone, and that number is estimated to be hundreds of thousands nationwide. At the onset of the pandemic, CMA donated $1 million to THE RECORDING ACADEMY’s MUSICARES COVID-19 Relief Fund, in addition to a $100,000 donation to MUSIC HEALTH ALLIANCE. Report: Souljah Boy Accused Of Assault, Sexual Battery

A woman who says she was employed by SOULJA BOY as his personal assistant has accused the rapper in a lawsuit filed in LOS ANGLES of multiple instances of assault and sexual battery, holding her against her will and refusing to pay her.

The woman, who filed as "JANE DOE," claims SOULJA BOY (DeANDRE CORTEZ WAY), hired her in DECEMBER 2018 and agreed to pay her $500 a week while she lived and worked at his homes in MALIBU and BELL CANYON. including cleaning, cooking and chauffeuring.

She claims, after less than a month, her boss began sending unsolicited photos of his penis.

“A brief consensual relationship developed, but it soon devolved into violence,” according to a press release from DOE’s lawyer, NEAMA RAHMANI. more »

Report: Ultra Music Festival 2021 In Miami Canceled

Reports are that the ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL is ready to cancel this year's event, but are awaiting the city of MIAMI officials to approve their permit request for the following year before making the announcement.

This will mark the second consecutive year ULTRA has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Organizers hope to host the event MARCH 25th-27th, 2022 at BAYFRONT AMPHITHEATRE in MIAMI. 

The letter from ULTRA attorney SANDY YORK to MIAMI city manager ARTHUR NORIEGA cited the same conditions that led to last year's cancellation are posing a threat in 2021. 

Calling the 2020 cancellation a "postponement," ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL notified 2020 ticket holders in MARCH that their tickets would be good for the 2021 event and that they they would not be issuing refunds. This move resulted in a class action lawsuit on behalf of ticket holders looking for a refund. This case went into arbitration in NOVEMBER 2020.

The event, which hosts  international shows via license deals, did host ULTRA TAIWAN in NOVEMBER 2020 with a lineup featuring ALESSO, STANDER and KAYZO.
